What To Do If Your Three Years Old Child Is Ready To Start Potty Training But Is Petrified Of The Potty

Your Brave little one has probably tried to talk himself in to felling comfortable around the potty. Of corse he can't and his feelings of panic escalate. He has the cognitive readiness to use the potty. Probably has the physical control. But with out the emotional confidence, he will continue to overwhelm. Tell him sincerely that you don't want him to be sad or worried about going on the potty, there's no hurry.

Encourage him to verbalize his experience. If sitting on the potty upsets him, Tell him to say "I DONT WANT TO SIT ON THE POTTY RIGHT NOW." As a three year old your child probably has the language skills to speak up for what he wants and needs.

Work on building his emotional comfort. Tell him not to sit on the potty naked for now. Try having him sit with his clothes on. Ask questions that will focus his attention on a positive potty experience and not on the fears, "DO YOU LIKE TH E LITTLE POTTY OR THE BIG POTTY." "IS THE POTTY SEAT LIKE A CIRCLE OR LIKE A SQUARE." Try building confidence through playful experiences using books, dolls, or songs. He needs to rehearse his skills in easy settings before practicing for real.

Do everything you can to help your child feel in control of the potty experience. When he feel strong and capable the rest will be easy.
