Planing For Successful Sleepovers At Home

If sleeping away from home is uncomfortable for your child, invite your child's friend to a sleepover at your house. Respect your child's preference to either be open and nonchalant about his potty skills or to be quiet and discreet. Discretion is fine, but be sure your child is getting positive messages in your home that nighttime accidents are normal.

  • Talk to your child ahead of time if he wears nighttime pull-ups. Is he okay that his friends see him in pull-ups or does he want to put them on privately?

  • Create a positive nighttime potty routine. It is better to do your "mom act" than have your child pretend not to need him usual bathroom routine.

  • Incorporate the games for middle of the night trips to the bathroom.

  • Design sleeping arrangements to fit the situation, plastic matters covers, sleeping bags, camping cots, and a camping theme.

  • Have an accident plan. Don't ask children to guess what they should do "if", specially in emotionally sensitive situation. Tell them you are nearby and ready to help.

  • Plan a response to teasing, just in case. You never know if another child might say something hurtful. Teach your child early that does hurtful words say more about the speaker than about him. Remind him of truth, that potty accidents are nothing to be ashamed of. Then, teach him to stand up for him self and tell others to stop saying hurtful words.
